According to NPD, Call of Duty IV has once again taken the top US software sales slot. But that isn't the whole story. The 360 version of Call of Duty IV owned the top slot. Multiplatform wise, Capcom's Devil May Cry 4 narrowly outsold Call of Duty IV by 10,000 copies. It all depends on how you want to categorize things. Also, the video game industry as a whole took in $668 million dollars in February, which is an increase of 47% from 2007.
US Software Sales February
1. Call of Duty IV: Modern Warfare - Xbox 360 - 296,200
2. Devil May Cry 4 - Xbox 360 - 295,200
3. Wii Play - Wii - 289,700
4. Devil May Cry 4 - PS3 - 233,500
5. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock - Wii - 222,900
6. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games - DS - 205,600
7. Lost Odyssey - Xbox 360 - 203,600
8. Turok - Xbox 360 - 197,700
9. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock - PS2 - 183,800
10. Rock Band - Xbox 360 - 161,800
OUR TAKE: Despite coming in 3rd in harware sales, the 360 continues to dominate in the software department. That really should come as no surprise to anyone that has been paying attention. But the PS3 is closing the gap fast in sales of major multi-platform titles, and that is with considerably less systems in North American homes. If Sony continues to expand in North America, it could make future NPD numbers look much different.
And a personal message from one Wii owner to the millions out there. Please stop buying Wii Play. I'm honestly begging you. The developers have already picked up on the trend of mini-games. We don't need to give them even more reason to focus all of their Wii development efforts on it. |
